Riots in Stockholm, Sweden. Still from YouTube video by Chang Frick
Stockholm has seen three nights of violence across the city following the shooting of a man by police last week.
The shooting incident last Monday, which appears to be the catalyst for the riots, occurred in the largely immigrant suburb of Husby after the man reportedly threatened officers with a machete. This follows a number of previous claims of police racism in the Swedish capital, with reports of them calling immigrants “monkeys” being widely reported.
More than 100 cars were set alight on Sunday night, with unrest spreading across nine suburbs by Tuesday with cars being torched and objects thrown at police officers and firefighters in Western and Southern parts of the city.
Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt made clear that the country would not be intimidated by the rioters, saying:
“We have groups of young men who think that that they can and should change society with violence. Let’s be clear: this is not okay. We cannot be ruled by violence.”
