A mass grave with the bodies of at least nine people has been uncovered in a family’s garden in Sri Lanka.
The family found the graves whilst clearing their garden in the town of Puthukkudiyiruppu, in the northern region of Mullaittivu according to Al Jazeera (AFP).
The United Nations estimates the civil war in Sri Lanka claimed at least 100,000 lives between 1972 and 2009, with a number of mass graves being uncovered in the years since the defeat of the Tamil Tigers.
This discovery comes just before a UN Human Rights Council (UNHCR) session next week where Sri Lanka will face criticism for its alleged failure to investigate reports of war crimes committed during the civil war.
