Six men have been found dead, with their bodies abandoned in cars near to the Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia.

Investigators found that the victims had been shot, with three of the four cars rigged with explosives. One of the bombs went off as police approached the scene, but no-one was injured in the blast, and the other two were diffused by officers.

The bodies were discovered near Pyatigorsk, close to the volatile Caucasus region where an Islamic insurgency and fight for independence has continued for decades.

Two of the bodies have been identified as local taxi drivers, and another as a furniture craftsman, although the identities of three of the victims are still unknown

The discovery will further heighten security concerns over the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, following the recent suicide bomb attacks on Volgograd.
