More than 400 dolphins were found washed up on Peru’s Pacific ocean beaches last month, with authorities still trying to establish their cause of death.
Autopsies are expected to be completed on the cetacean mammals in the next few weeks, with the forensic pathologists examining their lungs, kidneys, and livers.
Peru saw more than 200 dolphins wash up on shores in the Lambayeque region in 2012, but scientists were unable to determine the reason for their mass death, but some have speculated that it was a result of water contamination or in other smaller fish that contained high levels of toxins. Others have said that the dolphins may have died as a result of consuming waste floating plastics in the sea.
