The castaway who washed up on a reef in the Ebon Atoll last month after spending 16 months adrift may be too weak to travel home to El Salvador and will remain in the Marshall Islands for a while longer.
Jose Salvador Alvarenga, 37, was described as “very frail” by an official with El Salvador’s embassy in Tokyo, and needs more medical tests and a few more days of rest before he will be strong enough to make the journey home according to reports.
Alvarenga still needed two people to help get him back to his hotel room after a public appearance on Thursday.
Alvarenga told officials that he washed up on the reef 16 months after he and another fisherman left Mexico on a fishing trip, before a storm pushed them off course in the Pacific.
