The total number of injuries remains unknown, and the death toll continues to climb as those injured are treated in nearby hospitals.
Around 2,000 people were reportedly inside the mosque when the bomb exploded, according to Reuters.
The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or “Daesh”, has claimed responsibility for the attack, calling the mosque a “temple of rejectionists”.
The Emir of Kuwait visited the mosque soon after the attack to stand in solidarity with the victims.
