The Islamic State (IS) have released a new propaganda video apparently showing the brutal killing of dozens of Ethiopian Christians in Libya.

The 29-minute video shows one group of men being executed by gunshot in the desert, while a second group of men were beheaded on a beach.

The victims are believed to be members of the Ethiopian Church recently seized by IS militants in Libya.

The footage bares the logo of the official IS al-Furqan media arm, and follows a similar style to another IS video that showed the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in February, when the group threatened to “conquer Rome”.

Ethiopian Information Minister Redwan Hussein condemned the killings as a crime against humanity and said that the Ethiopian government was trying to verify the names and nationalities of those shown in the video.

The footage also shows the destruction of various Christian Churches and historical sites by IS militants, and one masked fighter delivers a long statement, ordering christians to convert to Islam or pay “jizya”, a special tax outlined in the Quran.

Libya has seen a surge in violence in its ongoing civil war since last summer, with some local Islamist groups pledging allegiance to the Islamic State.
