An emaciated man has washed up on a reef in the Ebon Atoll claiming to have been adrift for 16 months.
The man claims to have floated 12,500km from Mexico in his propellerless 7m fibreglass boat, before reaching the reef where he was spotted by two locals.
The man, who calls himself Jose Ivan, is reported to have long hair and a beard, and dressed only in a pair of ragged underpants and only speaks Spanish.
Ivan says that he left Mexico for El Savador in September 2012 with another man, who died several months ago whilst they were lost at sea. With no fishing equipment on board, Ivan survived by catching turtles and birds with his bare hands, and drinking turtle blood to rehydrate when there was no rain.
