A body has been discovered in the search for the missing British backpacker Gareth Huntley.

Malaysian police have confirmed that a body of a white male has been found on Tioman island, with the BBC reporting that it was found “near the Juara Turtle Project where Mr Huntley was living and working”.

More than 100 people were involved in the search for Huntley, 34, from north London, who went missing on 27 May after telling friends he was going on a hike to a nearby waterfall.

Malaysian authorities had come under criticism for their search, but in recent days British ministers were assured that the Malaysia government had employed boats, a helicopter, and search dogs along with the 103-person team in the search.
