Kenyan security services have said that they are now in control of the situation at the Westgate mall in Nairobi, after a siege of more than two days has left at least 62 people dead and more than 170 injured.

There are reports of an explosion and short bursts of gunfire this morning as the security services engaged with the militants. They are now combing the mall for any remaining fighters, and believe that all hostages have been freed and six militants killed.

The attack began at around midday local time (09:00 GMT) on Sunday when a group of heavily armed militants entered the Westgate shopping centre firing automatic weapons and throwing grenades.

Islamic militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, declaring that the action was in response to the Kenyan military involvement in the African Union (AU) action in Somalia.

The attack was an international statement from al-Shabab, with the victims of the attack coming from all parts of the globe including six Britons.

Kenya’s foreign minister, Amina Mohamed, also said that the attackers themselves were an international force, with two American aged 18 or 19 and a British woman who has “done this type of thing many times before” amongst the militants.

British officials said they are aware of Mohamed’s comments, but they would not be drawn on the identity of the attackers as investigations are still underway.
