Infamous Japanese crime syndicate, the yakuza, has launched its own website in a effort to rebrand the organisation and promote a strong anti-drugs message.

The outdated-looking website, entitled ‘Banish drugs and purify the nation alliance‘ was built by the Yamaguchi-gumi group, according to the Guardian, and offers a photo gallery and a number of videos.

One of the videos shows members of the syndicate visiting a shrine with a traditional-sounding Japanese folk-song in the background, with another showing rice-cake production.

The yakuza syndicates are not illegal in Japan, and unlike similar groups in Italy and China, the groups such as the Yamaguchi-gumi have official headquarters with well-known leaders, and websites such as this are a way for them to demonstrate their humanitarian efforts and attract new members.
