The former editor of the Ming Pao newspaper in Hong Kong is in a critical condition after being stabbed.

Kevin Lao suffered three wounds after he was attacked by two men with a meat cleaver on Tai On Street in Sai Wan Ho on Wednesday morning. The attackers then fled the scene by motorbike.

Lau’s recent replacement at Ming Pao by a Malaysian editor viewed as more pro-Beijing sparked protests in Hong Kong over press freedoms and Beijing’s influence over the media in the former British colony. He was replaced by a Malaysian editor who is viewed as more pro-Beijing.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association and Foreign Correspondents Club have condemned the attacks and urged authorities to address the growing number of attacks on members of the press in the Chinese special administrative region.
