Foreign Secretary William Hague has said that the UK and US remained “closely aligned” on Syria after discussions with US Secretary of State John Kerry at a joint press conference in London.

Kerry made clear that the special relationship between the UK and US remained strong despite parliament’s vote not to use military force in Syria, with the countries remaining “true friends”.

Kerry went on to reiterate that the US is not looking to have boots on the ground in Syria, and that the only solution to the ongoing civil war is a political solution, not a military one. Any military intervention would be to demonstrate to Assad that he could not continue to use chemical weapons against the Syrian people.

Kerry said:

We are not talking about war. We are not going to war
