Police in Paris are hunting a gunman after he attacked the offices of the French newspaper Libération and then opened fire at the offices of bank Société Génerale in the La Defense business district.

A photographer was seriously injured with shots to the chest and stomach, in the attack at Liberation at 10:15 local time (09:15 GMT), with staff at the newspaper finding three spent cartridges at the scene.

The attacker said nothing during the attack, but Libération have said that man matched the images of the man that attacked television news station BFMTV on Friday, with police now stationed outside all the major media offices in the French capital.

90 minutes after the attack on Libération, a gunman fired shots at the offices of bank Société Génerale, although no-one was injured.

A helicopter was flying over central Paris as police tried to find the attacker after witnesses reported seeing him on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, after forcing a motorist to drive him there at gunpoint and claiming he was carrying grenades. However, he remains at large, with police believing that he escaped on the Metro.

The suspect is said to be between 40 and 45, shaven-headed and overweight, with police sources telling news website Rue89 that the man was armed with grenades as well as a hunting rifle. WIitnesses have described him as wearing an old-fashioned cap and a long khaki coat.

The public have been told to stay indoors.
