French authorities have launched an investigation into an Indian couple for neglect, after they found three feral children living in appalling conditions in a northern Paris flat.

Medical staff raised questions about the couple to social services after the mother’s appeared to be indifferent to the birth of her baby girl on New year’s Day.

Authorities visited the couple’s flat and found three young boy, aged two, five, and six, living in squalid conditions in the La Courneuve district in the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb of Paris. None of them are believed to have ever left the apartment, which had no furniture, and they slept on mattresses on the floor. They never went to school or had vaccinations or other medical check-ups.

The eldest two boys suffer from developmental issues, struggling with speech and walking, and all three appeared malnourished when they were taken into car in February.

The parents, aged 33 and 27, are under suspicion of depriving their children of care, a crime which is punishable with up to seven years in jail and a €100,000 (£83,500) fine.
