A French soldier has opened fire at a suspected attacker whilst on guard at the Louvre museum in Paris.

The attacker was armed with a machete and shouted “Allahu Akbar” as he attacked a soldier and attempted to enter the Louvre’s shopping centre.

One soldier received a head injury in the altercation, and the attacker was shot in the abdomen and seriously injured.

A major police operation is underway and the museum has been evacuated and its underground station closed.

Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said the attack was “terrorist in nature”
