A suspension bridge on Italy’s A10 motorway has collapsed near the Italian city of Genoa, killing at least 10 motorists.

Amateur video shows one of the towers holding up the Morandi suspension bridge disintegrating in heavy rains and strong winds, causing queuing vehicles to plunge around 100m onto the train tracks below shortly before noon local time (10:00 GMT).

Authorities have confirmed at least 10 casualties, but the head of the local ambulance service has been quoted as saying there were “dozens of dead” as a result of the incident Italian Transport Minister Danilo Toninelli described as “an immense tragedy”.

Dozens of emergency services vehicles are at the scene, with rescuers working around the clock to save those still stranded on the bridge and help any survivors on the ground.
