A 34-year-old man was seriously injured after an attack in the early hours of Monday morning in the German city of Cologne.

Police arrived on the scene in central Cologne shortly before 04:00 local time (03:00 BST), and an injured man was discovered inside a white Mercedes SUV with head injuries and stab wound. He was immediately rushed to hospital.

Crime scene officers discovered blood, shattered glass, and spent bullet cases on the ground. The police have not confirmed the weapons used in the incident.

Witnesses told local newspaper Koelner Express that they saw three or four well-dressed people arguing with another man, before attacking him with axes. They said the man then tried to escape his attackers and climbed into his car, before one of the other men fired a shot at the vehicle.

Shortly after the attack, police questioned a group of people in a local bar near Weidengasse, who were later taken into custody for further questioning about the incident. Two vehicles were also seized for the investigation.
