The three Al-Jazeera journalists who were arrested on Wednesday for flying a drone over Paris have been released.

Three foreign journalists from the Qatar-based news network Al-Jazeera were taken into police custody in Paris for allegedly flying an unmanned aerial vehicle or “drone” over the city.

Flying drones in Paris requires a permit during daytime and is illegal at night, and carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a €75,000 (£55,000) fine.

Those arrested were aged 70, 54, and 36, and were reportedly caught by police in the Bois de Boulogne, while one was piloting a drone, the second filming, and the third watching, according to AFP.

One of the journalists will plead guilty to illegally flying a drone at night before a magistrate in Paris next week, while his colleagues will not face charges, according to RFI.

The arrests followed two nights of drones seen flying over Paris landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and above the US embassy, close to Place de la Concorde.

France has increased security since the January terror attacks in Paris that left 20 people dead, and some had feared that the drones could have been used for surveillance by individuals or groups looking to make another attack.
