A policewoman has been killed and a second person seriously injured after a gunman opened fire in Paris less than 24 hours after the massacre at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
A witness described a man dressed in black clothing and a bulletproof vest and carrying a machine-gun and pistol running towards the officer and shooting her at point-blank range in the suburb of Montrouge.
The gunman fled the scene.
It is unclear whether the two attacks are linked, but the shooting has caused tensions to escalate further in the French capital.
French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve warned against media speculation and jumping to conclusions after the incident.
