A man has been shot by French police outside Notre-Dame cathedral after he attacked an officer with a hammer.
The man shouted “This is for Syria” as he assaulted the officer in what French police say is being treated as a terrorist incident.
The officer received minor injuries and the suspect was wounded in the chest as armed officers nearby opened fire.
French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb said that the attacker was carrying the identity card of an Algerian student, but did not share his name.
Paris police say the situation is now “under control”, and the hundreds of tourists who were inside the cathedral as the attack unfolded have now been allowed to leave.
France remains under a state of emergency after a wave of terror attacks. More 230 people have been killed by militants in the country since 2015.
The incident comes three days after attackers used a van and kitchen knives to kill seven people in London.
