The co-pilot of Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 has been arrested after hijacking diverting his Rome-bound plane to Geneva.
The plane was en route from Adis Ababa via Khartoum to Rome, and flying over Italy when the co-pilot reportedly locked himself in the cockpit and took over control when the pilot went to use the toilet.
Italy scrambled two fighter jets to accompany Ethiopian Airlines flight 702 after the hijacker informed authorities of his actions, but passengers were unaware of his actions.
When he had safely landed the plane at Geneva Airport, the man exited onto the runway with a rope and turned himself in to Swiss authorities to request asylum.
The passengers were then safely escorted from the plane by Swiss police.
