A father in Australia has been shot dead by police after beating and stabbing his son to death in front of horrified children at cricket practice.
Luke Batty, 11, died of fatal head injuries at the scene in the Tyabb Cricket Ground in Melbourne at about 18.30 local time (07:30 GMT) on Wednesday despite paramedics attempting to revive him.
He had reportedly begged his mother to spend more time with his father at the cricket ground as he gets to spend little time with him, before he was brutally stabbed and beaten to death, reportedly with a cricket bat, in front of onlookers.
His father, Greg Batty, 54, was then shot by police after threatening them with a knife, and later died in hospital.
Greg Batty is believed to have suffered from mental health problems, and police believe his son’s murder to have been a calculated and unpreventable act.
