At least 23 people have died and 54 more injured, after eating contaminated confectionery in the central Punjab province of Pakistan.

Eleven of the dead are from the same family after a father bought some sweets to celebrate the birth of his son.

The two owners and an employee of a local sweet shop have been arrested in relation to the poisoning, while the source of the contamination is underway by police.

Local sources say that police found open sachets of pesticide at sweetshop, and laboratory tests are underway to determine how the laddoos, a popular ball-shaped sweet made of flour, minced dough and sugar, became contaminated.
