A US Navy F18 jet has crashed on farmland near Ely in Cambridgeshire, police say.

A member of the public alerted emergency services to the crash at Shippea Hill around 10:30 BST, but the cause of the crash remains unclear.

The jet was one of six heading back to the US via the UK after combat deployment in the Middle East, and crashed after failing to rendezvous with a tanker shortly after leaving RAF Lakenheath.

Nigel Pickover, on the scene for the Eastern Daily Press reports that the pilot of the jet has died despite ejecting before impact.
