Two people have died as the heavy rains and strong winds have added the the flooding problems in southern England.

A female taxi driver, 49, was killed by falling masonry blown from a building in central London, and an 85-year-old man died after a “freak wave” struck a cruise ship in the English Channel.

The winds of up to 129km/h (80mph) and heavy downpours have added to existing problems with flood water, with the UK facing major disruptions from some of the worst weather in years.

The Environment Agency has issued 17 severe flood warnings for southern England.

The stormy weather is expected to ease over the weekend and power was been restored to 310,000 homes overnight, but 140,000 remain cut off from the grid.
