The Environment Agency has issued 23 severe flood warnings across southern England, with the Met Office also issuing amber warnings for wind for the same areas.

More than 1,000 homes have been evacuated in the Thames Valley and West Country, and 16,000 homes remain without power from the 180km/h winds on Wednesday.

Up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall in the south-west of England and Wales, with 140km/h (85mph) winds following in the early hours of tomorrow.

Thousands of sandbags are being piled up around homes and businesses to try and protect buildings from the torrential rains and rising river levels.
