When people consider the best European beaches, many Britons will think of the warmer seas and golden beaches in Italy or Spain, but the UK offers two of the continents best beaches, according to a new survey.

In a list compiled by the travel website TripAdvisor, Woolacombe in Devon was ranked as one of the top five beaches in Europe, with its renowned surf and long, picturesque beach.

One commenter on TripAdvisor said of Woolacomb:

“One of my favourite places in the UK. Beautiful beach which is always so clean and the local people are just lovely. Great little shops and the local area is fantastic for holidays with families or couples.”

Another commented:

“I Love spending the afternoon having a stroll from Woolacombe to Puttsborogh & back. It is such a fantastic open space with such beauty and it really is North Devon at it’s best.”

Weymouth Beach in Dorset also made the top ten, demonstrating that the South West of Britain remains one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Top of the list was Rabbit Beach on Lampedusa, a picturesque Italian island closer to Libya and the European mainland.
