A go-kart crash has left two three-year-old cousins are in a critical condition in hospital and five others injured.

Crowds were watching the Warbleton go-karting Bank Holiday Soap Box Derby in East Sussex, when one of the pedal-driven vehicles left the road and hit a group of spectators, including the two toddlers, at 15:10.

Both children suffered head injuries and had to be evacuated by helicopter to separate hospitals, the girl to Kings College Hospital and the boy to St George’s Hospital, both in south London.

Five other spectators suffered minor arm and leg injuries.

The Lack Duck Pub in Warbleton, that organises the go-kart race issued a statement saying:

“The event has been run for the last three years for charity without any major incident.

We are devastated that it ended the way it did on Monday and we wish the very best to all the people injured and their families.”

the parents should be ashamed of themselves putting the children deliberately in danger, its disgusting.

    • At an organised event it is the responsibility of the organisers to carry out an adequate risk assessment and have a Health and Safety Plan. Without that, how do you know the hazardous area and how risky they are.

“The event has been run for the last three years for charity without any major incident.” isn’t an adequate risk assessment.

As the road was closed, was it an adopted road? Were the police and council involved in planning this event. People may moan about the H&S killjoys, but this incident shows again the need for sensible application of adequate safety.
