The chief of staff to a Conservative MP has been arrested following an allegation of rape at the Houses of Parliament.
It is understood that Sam Armstrong, a 23-year-old high ranking aide of South Thanet MP Craig Mackinlay, was arrested on Friday after an attack was alleged to have taken place at Westminster earlier that morning.
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a man was arrested after a rape accusation at the Houses of Parliament, and said he has been bailed until January pending further enquiries.
Parliament has said it is working closely with the police on the investigation.
In a statement following the revelations about his aide, the office of Mackinlay said:
“Mr Mackinlay was made aware of an allegation against a staff member and granted permission for the police to access his Westminster office.
“Mr Mackinlay is monitoring the situation and awaits further details from the police and Parliamentary Authorities.”
Armstrong previously made the headlines last year after being named among a group of young Conservatives in the “Tatler Tory” bullying scandal, triggered by the suicide of 21-year-old activist Elliott Johnson.
