Top 100 baby names for boys and girls revealed

Oliver takes over from Harry as the most popular name for baby boys, while Amelia remains the most popular girls’ name, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The figures from England and Wales show that girls are more likely to have a unique name than boys, with the royal offspring having a major impact on the popularity of boys’ names.

Popular culture continues to have an impact on parents’ choices, with Game of Thrones fans having 50 girls called Khaleesi, 187 called Arya, five called Sansa and three called Catelyn. There were also 11 Gregors, 11 Theons, six Tyrions, and four Brandans for the boys.

The popularity of Marvel comic book movies also resulted in 27 boys named Loki and 13 named Thor.

Over the last ten years Oscar has risen to prominence as a popular boys’ name, now ranked seventh and up 55 places since 2003. Meanwhile Ava has jumped 160 places to become the 4th most popular girls’ name, and Isla has risen 195 places to become the 5th most popular over the same period.
