The wealth of Britain’s richest people has risen by 15.4% over the last 12 months, according to the Sunday Times rich list.
To make it onto the yearly list of the 1000 wealthiest Britons, the rich need a minimum of £85 million in cash and assets. To get into the top 500, they need £190 million, up £30 million from just a year ago, with the country’s richest benefiting most from the country’s slow recovery.
The 1,000 richest people in the UK are now worth £449.654 billion, equivalent to a third of the UK’s gross domestic product (GDP), demonstrative of the worrying trend of wealth inequality in the UK. These numbers further support the Oxfam report in March which found that Britain’s five wealthiest family’s were worth more than the poorest 20% of the population.
