The storms that battered the south west of Britain yesterday have washed away a section of the railway line at the coastal town of Dawlish.

Owners of waterfront properties in the town were evacuated as waves crashed into their houses, and buckled nearby train tracks.

80 metres of rails tracks are hanging perilously above the sea on a stretch previously described as Britain’s most beautiful, with the main rail line through the South West closed for the foreseeable future.

The loss of the route to Devon and Cornwall will likely have a major impact on local businesses
