A woman has been taken to hospital with a suspected broken arm after a consumer “stampede” over discounted television deals at Asda for “Black Friday” in Belfast.

Alongside the reports of a woman with a broken arm, there were also claims of pensioners being knocked to the floor and a heavily pregnant woman being pushed and shoved in the chaos.

A number of TVs were reduced by 45% from £179 to £99 by the supermarket chain Asda, following a US tradition by Asda’s parent company Walmart to heavily discount electrical items on the Friday after Thanksgiving during the so-called “Black Friday”.

In the US, a number of people die from being trampled to death each year in the discount frenzy, with many commentators describing the chaos as the worst excesses of capitalist consumerism.
