Thames Valley Police arrived at the scene after receiving reports about a horse on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 near Membury services at around 04:45.
The horse was killed when hit by a car, and caused collisions between five vehicles including with a white van which overturned with the driver rescued by emergency services.
The eastbound carriageway remained as vehicles were cleared from the scene, with police putting in place a number of diversions, but lengthy delays continued for a number of hours.
