A 9m deep sinkhole appeared overnight, swallowing a car parked in a driveway in Walter’s Ash, Buckinghamshire.

Zoe Smith, 19, woke this morning to find that her Volkswagon Lupo had disappeared into the newly formed hole in her driveway overnight.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 08:32, and gave some safety advice to the family as well as cordoning off the area. They then handed the incident over to building control at Wycombe District Council.

Smith and her family now fear that their home could be swallowed by the sinkhole that may have been caused by heavy rain in the old clay pits nearby

Sinkholes are very rare in the UK, and are most commonly a result of a depression or collapse of earth beneath the surface.
