Over £9,000 has been raised for a Watford fan that was left in a critical condition after an unprovoked assault in Wolverhampton on Saturday.

Nick Cruwys, 44, was attacked at around 17:00 in Littles Lane, Wolverhampton, as he made his way to the train station with a group of friends after Watford drew 2-2 with Wolves at Molineux.

The Nick Cruwys’ Future Football Fund has been set by Wolves fan Ollie Floyd after hearing about the attack, and described his motives on the GoFundMe site, saying:

“Those responsible should be absolutely ashamed. As a Wolves fan myself, I feel absolutely disgusted by their actions and want to wish Nick a full and speedy recovery. As a token of goodwill and to restore the community’s faith in football, I would like everyone to show that the majority speaks much louder than the cowards that attacked Nick.”

In a statement, Watford FC said:

“The thoughts of everyone associated with Watford FC are with a Hornets’ supporter – at yesterday’s game – who is now critically ill after an unprovoked post-match attack.”

Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey said the club were “deeply saddened” to hear about the attack and their thoughts were with the supporter and his family. He continued:

“As a club we deplore any violence in or around football matches, and we will work closely with the relevant authorities to help bring the perpetrator, or perpetrators, to justice”

Detective Sergeant Adam Keen from the force’s CID, said:

“The group of friends were completely outnumbered and the victim suffered a severe head injury which has left him in a critical condition in hospital.

“His family have been informed and we are in the process of taking statements from witnesses and locating any CCTV which might have captured those responsible for the attack.

“I would urge anyone with information which will help our investigation to contact me as soon as possible on 101.”

Anyone not wishing to speak to a police officer can give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
