The killer of 13-year-old Milly Dowler has been awarded £4,500 in compensation after he was attacked in a West Yorkshire prison.

Levis Bellfield was attacked by another prisoner with a makeshift weapon at Wakefield Prison in 2009, two years before he was convicted and jailed for life for the murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler in 2002.

Bellfield is also serving sentences for the murders of Marsha McDonnel and Amelie Delagrange, and attempted murder of Kate Sheedy.

The Ministry of Justice admitted liability but said it was “hugely disappointed” with the decision by Durham County Court.
