A police officer has died after being struck by a stolen car during a high speed pursuit in Merseyside.

PC David Phillips was hit by a red Mitsubishi pick-up truck at 02.10 BST, when the vehicle mounted the central reservation on Wallasey Dock Road North, Wallasey.

Police had been called to the scene of a burglary at an estate agents premises on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead, shortly after 01:00.

The pick-up truck was stolen from the scene, and was then spotted by a police patrol at 01.28. The police car began pursuit of the stolen vehicle in a bid to apprehend the offenders.

The car chase continued onto Wallasey Dock Road North, where two neighbourhood officers had deployed a “stop stick” in an effort to stop the car.

The driver of the stolen car avoided the road barrier by mounting the central reservation and struck one of the neighbourhood officers.

The injured officer was aided by his colleagues and rushed to Arrowe Park Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The stolen Mitsubishi was found abandoned a short while later in Corbyn Street, Wallasey.

Merseyside Police have launched a murder investigation and are examining CCTV footage to find evidence of the identities of the burglars.
