Harry Potter author JK Rowling has been on the receiving end of a number of abusive messages from Scottish nationalists after she publicly pledged support to the Better Together campaign.
Rowling donated £1 million to the pro-Union Better Together campaign and in a message posted to her website, said that there was a “denial of risks” within the “Yes” campaign led by Alex Salmond and the SNP.
She said that she feared that some in Scotland might judge her “insufficiently Scottish” to have a view on independence despite living in the country for the last 23 years, but said those that who try to make it about lineage become a little “Death Eaterish”.
She also noted that there was a “fringe of nationalists who like to demonise anyone who is not blindly and unquestionably pro-independence”, and so may have expected some of the abuse that has flowed since her statement.
Much of the abuse tried to belittle her literary work and seemed to want to bully Harry Potter and other characters, while others simply used coarse language to make it clear that they do not think she is welcome in the country. Still others used gendered insults or called her a “traitor”.
