Six Greenpeace activists are scaling London’s Shard building to protest against Shell’s plans to drill for oil and gas in the Arctic.
The six women chose the Shard for their protest because it was “modelled on a shard of ice” and “sits slap bang in the middle of Shell’s three London headquarters” according to their statement on website Save the Arctic. The building is the tallest in western Europe, giving the activists a good position to “shout about [Arctic drilling] from the rooftops”.
They plan to hang a huge art installation 310m up, and raise awareness of the environmental issues of Shell’s drilling in the Arctic, which they claim Shell are trying to hide. In a statement the group said:
“They don’t want us talking about their plan to drill in the Arctic. We’re here to shout about it from the rooftops.”
