A report by inspectors into Brixton prison has found that inmates were smoking so much marijuana that staff uniforms smelled of the drug.

The independent prison monitoring board has called for more searches of those entering the prison in the future, including searches of prison staff to prevent drugs being smuggled into the south London prison. The easy access to drugs contributed to “gambling, indebtedness, bullying and intimidation”, with staff shortages likely to blame according to the report.

A previous report into Brixton rison last year found that inmates were not being provided the education and training they required to assimilate back into “normal life” at the end of their sentence and to reduce the rate of re-offending.
