A Muslim man who held a British passport has been killed on Wednesday in Syria along with two others according to UK-based monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).
SOHR have said that the person may have been working with the Syrian rebels, but could not confirm this or the authenticity of the passport found with him. The man is believed to have been killed in the same area and at a similar time to when British doctor Isa Abdur Rahman was killed.
The Foreign Office is investigating these reports, but currently “have no verification” according to a spokesperson, and continued by saying that:
“The UK has warned for some time against all travel to Syria.”
On the Foreign Office website, it says:
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to Syria. British nationals in Syria should leave now by any practical means. The FCO is not able to provide consular services, and won’t be able to help your evacuation from the country.
Foreign Secretary William Hague announced that the UK had closed the British Embassy in Damascus and withdrawn all diplomatic personnel from the country on 1st March citing the escalating violence and bloodshed in the ongoing conflict.
