A British Airways (BA) Airbus A319 bound for Lyon in France was forced to return to Heathrow Airport at around 21:00 on Thursday evening after flames were seen coming from one of the engines during take-off.
One witness told the BBC that he saw flames “spitting out of the engine” before the plane quickly returned to Heathrow where the engine was immediately shut off and passengers evacuated to safety.
The plane landed safely and the engine was immediately shut off before passengers were taken to safety.
A BA spokesperson said:
“A flight experienced what’s known as an ‘engine surge’ as it took off from Heathrow, but it returned and touched down safely.
We have also scheduled a larger aircraft to operate to Lyon to ensure we can get all our customers there as soon as possible. We can understand how frustrating the delay to their plans must be.”
