Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for his role in the phone hacking scandal that brought down the newspaper.

The 46-year-old former Conservative Party communications director was found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones at the Old Bailey last week.

Former News of the World news editor Greg Miskiw and ex-chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck were both jailed for six months, and former journalist James Weatherup was given a four month suspended sentence for their roles in the scandal at the Sunday newspaper.

Former private investigator Glenn Mulcaire also received a six-month suspended sentence

In sentencing the four men, judge Mr Justice Saunders said that they caused the victims of phone hacking “serious distress” by picking up “intensely personal” messages and making them doubt the honesty of their friends and families.
