Syria: air strike on mosque kills 42 in Aleppo Governorate

At least 42 people have died after an air strike hit a mosque in a rebel-held village of al-Jineh in the northern Aleppo Governorate of Syria.

The incident occurred while the mosque was packed with worshippers for evening prayers, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the planes involved in the strike have not been identified

Russian and Syrian warplanes routinely target rebel strongholds in the region, and US aircraft have carried out a series of strikes on al-Qaeda militants and members of other jihadist groups there.

On Thursday, the US said it carried out a successful air strike targeting al-Qaeda militants in the neighbouring province of Idlib. Spokesman Col John J Thomas said:

“We did not target a mosque, but the building that we did target – which was where the meeting [of militants]took place – is about 50ft (15m) from a mosque that is still standing.”

The Russian and Syrian militaries have not released statements on the incident.
