A number of explosions have rocked the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, with police and militants involved in gun battles on the streets.

The attacks centred around Thamrin Street, a popular shopping district near to foreign embassies.

Armed police and snipers were deployed on the streets of the capital, and police say the situation is now under control.

At least five attackers, which police say are from a local group affiliated with the Islamic State, are believed to be amongst the seven dead. Three attackers have been arrested.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which Indonesian President Joko Widodo described the attacks as an “act of terror”.

He said:

“We all are grieving for the fallen victims of this incident, but we also condemn the act that has disturbed the security and peace and spread terror among our people.”
