Anthony Chalmers
My names Anthony Chalmers and this is going to be the first of hopefully many columns that I’m going write about some of my favourite independent record labels…
I promoted shows around London under the name God Don’t Like It from 2008 – 2012 working with loads of fantastic bands before I decided that didn’t fancy that anymore. So now I’m also booking a little Dalston venue called Power Lunches, co-running my own little indie Robot Elephant Records, and you might see me DJing regularly around town!
I’m still occasionally promoting a show or two with acts I’m especially into, Euros Childs (Of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci fame) at The Lexington in September is this next one. The man is a bona-fide hero of music.
I feel passionately about independent record labels – something that people do basically only for the love of bands that they like with very little chance of making any money at all, where breaking even is a success and it’s a lot of work.
But at the back of all of our minds is that you never know, maybe my little label could be the next Mute Records / 4AD / Rough Trade etc!
Through a lot of 2010/11 I did a podcast with a friend, Gareth Main (Of Bearded Magazine fame), called the Independent Music Podcast focusing on the best new Independent Label releases of the week, but unfortuneatly that dropped out. So this is my new outlet to shout about INDIE LABELS!
So over the course of this series I’m going to be writing about and interviewing some of the people who run some of the best independent record labels and hopefully introduce you all to some great bands you might not have listened too before.
For our first Indie Label feature it’s going to be the wonderful London indie Parlour Records…
