The Wizard of Oz
Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead was originally a song written by Yip Harburg for the Wizard of Oz soundtrack and performed by Judy Garland, but it has seen a rapid rise in this week’s charts due to the death of Margaret Thatcher.
Judy Garland’s rendition of the song, which she sung along with the Munchkins and Glinda the Good Witch (played by Billie Burke) is currently sitting at number 1 of the Amazon MP3 chart and number 2 in the iTunes UK download chart. Moreover, Ella Fitzgerald’s cover of the song has also jumped into the charts, with it currently sitting at number 4 in the Amazon chart.
Lady Thatcher was a divisive Prime Minister, and whilst the traditional media outlets have offered mostly praise and reverence of the Iron Lady, there is a large section of the British population that were far from sad on hearing the news of her death. There have been reports of parties around various areas of the UK celebrating her death, where Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead would be playing on repeat.
