A veteran BBC DJ’s broadcasting days are over after he was forced to resign after accidentally playing a song containing the N-word.

David Lowe, 67, played an 82-year-old recording to the song “The Sun Has Got Its Hat On” by Ambrose & His Orchestra on BBC local radio, unaware that the song includes the slur.

On his blog, Lowe explains

“You’ve got to listen very carefully indeed to actually hear it but, yes, it is there on the recording”

The broadcaster offered to apologise to his listeners live on air, but BBC executives, likely concerned after the recent scandal involving Jeremy Clarkson’s use of the word, told Lowe:

“I agree you have acted properly throughout and we are grateful for both your apology and your appreciation of the seriousness of the situation.

But regrettably, I think we will have to accept your offer to fall on your sword to resolve this situation.”

The BBC has since admitted that it could have handled the situation better and offered Lowe his job back, but he has “respectfully declined their offer” due to ill health.
